Dennis Hurla is in his second season with the Kansas Christian College baseball team. Hurla brings 40 years of baseball coaching experience to the program that includes one year as the pitchers and catchers coach at the University of Saint Mary.

Hurla's most sucessful stint came as the head baseball coach at Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, KS. In 20 seasons at Ward, Hurla's teams played in the state championship game 14 times bringing home 10 Class 4A State Championships, four runner-up finishes, one third place and one fourth place finish in the state. Hurla finished his career at Ward with a 98-11 record in post season play.

From 2006 to 2008, Hurla's teams at Ward won 45 consecutive games to set the Kansas state record in all classes for consecutive games won. This included an undefeated season in 2007 in which the Cyclones finished 26-0. Hurla's teams won six consecutive state championships from 2003 to 2008.

Hurla also coached American Legion baseball for Kansas City Post 83/346 for 20 seasons. His teams claimed seven state championship titles in those 20 seasons. In 1991, Hurla led Post 83/346 to the American Legion World Series.
