Dr. Jim Poteet Returns to Lead Kansas Christian Athletics, Alters to Serve as Associate Head Coach for Men's Basketball

Dr. Jim Poteet, a revered figure in collegiate athletics with a distinguished career spanning over six decades, will be assuming the top leadership role in athletics as Vice President of Athletic Advancement, effective July 1. This announcement follows the upcoming departure of Jaime Cuellar, who has served as Athletic Director since 2022.

Dr. Poteet's journey in collegiate athletics is truly remarkable. He began his career in 1964 and has since made significant contributions as a coach, professor, and administrator. Dr. Poteet earned his physical education degree from Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) in 1963, followed by a master's degree from California State University.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Poteet has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a passion for excellence. His coaching achievements include leading successful basketball programs at institutions such as Biola University and Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University), where he amassed numerous wins and earned prestigious accolades, including NCAA National Basketball Coach of the Year.

In addition to his coaching endeavors, Dr. Poteet has served in administrative roles, notably as the Commissioner of the Association of Christian College Athletics. His visionary leadership and dedication were instrumental in the development of the association and its national tournament structure.

Most recently, Dr. Poteet served as a Vice President of Athletics and Assistant Basketball Coach at Kansas Christian College, where his contributions were invaluable in the success of the athletic department.

Effective July 1, Dr. Poteet will assume the role of Vice President of Athletic Advancement, where he will oversee the strategic direction of our athletics department. Additionally, Dr. Poteet will serve as the Head Coach of the men's basketball program for the 2024-2025 season..

Joining Poteet on the men's basketball coaching staff will be Associate Head Coach, Devin Alters. A native of Girard, Kansas, Devin is a proud graduate of Girard High School. Despite receiving offers from several colleges following his high school career, Devin made the decision to establish his own business, 2ndhandserves, in Kansas City. His entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence have been evident throughout his journey.

Devin joins us for his second season with the Falcons, having previously served as both Varsity Reserve and Varsity Assistant under the guidance of Jaime Cuellar. Last season, Devin played a pivotal role in the team's success, contributing to our impressive 19-11 record and securing a commendable 6th place finish at the national tournament after winning the Central Region Championship. 

Currently pursuing his degree in Business with a focus on Sports Management, Devin exemplifies a dedication to continuous growth and learning. Beyond his professional endeavors, Devin finds joy in his family life, residing in Kansas City with his wife Shelby and their son Beckett.
